Renewable Energy

As a responsible steward of the environment, Ameren is committed to exploring renewable energy options such as wind, solar, landfill gas, agricultural methane, hydroelectric and other alternative energy sources to generate electricity.

Here are a few ways we’re expanding our renewable resources:

Trash to Electricity

Expanding Solar

  • Ameren Missouri built the state's largest investor-owned solar energy center in O'Fallon, Mo. Featuring more than 19,000 solar panels, the O'Fallon Renewable Energy Center generates 5.7 MW of electricity.
  • Ameren has been evaluating the effectiveness and efficiencies of various solar power systems in our bi-state area.

Wind Power

  • Ameren Missouri has added wind power to our generation portfolio, purchasing energy from Horizon Wind Energy’s Pioneer Prairie Wind Farm to serve 26,000 homes.
  • Ameren Illinois has purchased or committed to purchase just under 15 million renewable energy credits, plus associated energy. This represents a $750 million-plus investment in renewable energy resources.

Hydroelectric Generation

It is important to recognize that renewable energy resources alone will not meet our customers’ energy needs. Most renewables, including wind and solar, do not provide a steady supply of power and require back up generation and connectivity to the grid when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow.

Looking ahead, responsible energy policies in the area of renewable generation must be implemented to ensure that we can continue to deliver dependable power to all of our customers at a fair price.

Energy Efficiency Programs

When it comes to saving energy, Ameren offers tools, tips and incentives focused on helping customers take action to manage their use along with energy efficiency programs. These resources allow customers to save with efficiency improvements today, and then continue to realize savings long into the future.
