Our Sustainability Approach

Ameren has an unwavering commitment to sustainability. Our vision is to “Lead the Way to a Sustainable Energy Future.” To us, that includes how we perform as a steward of the environment, how we manage our relationships with customers, communities and workforce and provide robust governance and oversight of our practices at the board of directors and management level.

We think about sustainability in the context of these four areas:

Environmental Stewardship

Operating to reduce emissions and waste and preserve natural resources while providing safe, reliable, and affordable electric and natural gas services. We are specifically focused on the following areas: climate change; environmental justice; environmental compliance; emissions reductions; waste management; and water management.

Social Impact

Placing people at the center of everything we do by supporting customers, empowering co-workers and enabling more sustainable communities. We are tracking our efforts in community impact; data privacy/cybersecurity; diversity, equity and inclusion; health and safety; human capital; and sustainable supply chain.

Governance

Execute policies and principles that integrate ESG matters into our risk management and strategic planning frameworks, as well as providing strong oversight. This includes considerations such as board and committee-level oversight; compensation; ethics and compliance; enterprise risk; management-level oversight and accountability; and regulatory and legislative engagement.

Sustainable Growth

Delivering superior and sustainable long-term value to our customers, the communities we serve, our shareholders and the environment.

Net Zero Chart showing decrease in carbon (CO2) emissions.Ameren has set ambitious goals to guide us on our path to a sustainable energy future. We strive to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, enabled by expanding our renewable energy resources without compromising on affordability and reliability. Our goal is to reduce carbon emissions 50% by 2030 and 85% by 2040, from 2005 levels. The new goals accelerate and expand on our 2017 pledge and are consistent with the objectives of the Paris Agreement in limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. We also will continue to grow our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts – which we know we can’t do alone, so we have pledged $10 million over the next five years to support nonprofits working for racial equity and opportunity in our communities.

We have aligned all our company’s goals with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to demonstrate how we are supporting global sustainability issues and hold ourselves accountable to progress. Ameren can have the biggest impact on the following SDGs: affordable and clean energy; decent work and economic growth; industry, innovation and infrastructure; sustainable cities and communities; and climate action.
