Trees and Your Energy Service
Did you know that when you properly care for trees on your property, you help keep energy reliable and efficient? Find out where to plant new trees and see our best practices for pruning trees around power lines.
Why Trim Trees
Ameren trims trees to minimize the likelihood of safety hazards and power outages. During high winds, strong thunderstorms or snow or ice storms, limbs and even whole trees can fall on electric lines, tearing down energized lines and equipment. Broken limbs can cause outages just by making the right kind of contact with electric lines and equipment.
Tree Planting Tips
By planning the location and species of the trees you plant, you can ensure that they will be an asset to you and your community. Trees planted in the wrong place can cause property damage and interfere with the reliability of your electric service. We're here to help.
Need Trees Trimmed?

Many tree-related impacts to electric service occur from trees outside the boundaries maintained by Ameren. Homeowners can help improve reliability by monitoring and properly maintaining tree health on their property. Ameren Illinois trims trees only in right-of-way and easements. Usually, when homes are built an easement is granted at the time of development that allows utilities the ability to access and maintain their equipment. Trees near the electric line that runs from the main power line to a home - called a service drop - are the property owner’s responsibility.

Find an Arborist

Find certified arborists in your area. Only qualified line clearance tree contractors are allowed to work within 10 feet of higher voltage lines.

Consider Options

We encourage homeowners to make sure the company they choose has a qualified arborist on staff, is insured for personal property, liability and workman’s compensation, and is affiliated with an arboricultural organization.

Contact Us

If you are concerned about tree growth near your service drop, please contact us for an appointment to have your service drop disconnected in order to have the trees trimmed safely.
Removing & Repurposing Tree Trimmings
The benefits of tree trimming go far beyond ensuring service reliability. As part of our commitment to the environment, Ameren works hard to repurpose trimmed vegetation whenever possible, such as providing free wood chips to our customers and feeding our local zoo friends.

Free Wood Chips

After our contractors trim or prune trees during power line maintenance, the leftover trimmings are broken down into wood chips. If you are interested in receiving free wood chips, please include your name, address, and phone number in an email to our team.

Powering Animals

We partner with zoos in Illinois and Missouri to offer recent tree and brush trimmings. This healthy addition to animal diets encourages natural foraging behavior and provides mental enrichment through focused energy and activity.

Brush & Debris

When our crews trim along distribution power lines for regular maintenance, the debris is normally removed from the property unless other arrangements are made with the property owner to leave the debris.

Speeding Up Restoration

To prioritize our restoration efforts after fallen trees cause outages, emergency crews often will not clean up debris and branches. Instead, they will leave it for disposal by the property owner.
